John White was born in 1867 in Sandyford, Glasgow, the son of Matthew White a grain merchant and flour miller. He was educated at Irvine Royal Academy and went on to study at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated DD and LLD. He became minister of Shettleston parish and minister of South Leith.
